Helmuth and Helga Buchholz lived on Mentawai (Indonesia) from 1965 to 1971 whilst carrying out missionary work. Impressed by the art and culture of the Mentawai people, they began collecting their everyday objects. The Mentawai islands are home to numerous endemic species. Among these is the Kloss’s gibbon (Hylobates klossii), a small ape that plays an unusually central role in Mentawai’s traditional culture.
